An O'Neill cylinder is a space station concept proposed by American physicist Gerard K. O'Neill in his 1976 book The High Frontier: Human Colonies in Space. We imagine a person throwing a ball in this space station in the direction opposite of the rotation of the station. What needs to be the velocity of the ball so that the Coriolis force provides the centripetal acceleration that will keep the ball in the orbit around the station? Part A of this problem investigates the artificial gravity due to the centrifugal force caused by the rotation of the space station.
