In June of 2013, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation replaced the Rawson Avenue bridge over I-94 in Oak Creek, just outside of Milwaukee.  The project used a Self-Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT), the first time this technology had been used in Wisconsin.  This is an example of an Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) technique and the department worked in concert with the Every Day Counts initiative of the Federal Highway Administration.

Early in 2013, the department started construction on the two new Rawson Avenue bridge spans in staging areas near the bridge. late May and early June, the existing Rawson Avenue bridge was dismantled.

On Friday, June 14th, starting at 10:00 pm, the department closed I-94 freeway and then used the SPMT to lift and move the new bridge spans into place.  The entire process took place safely within a 12 hour window, and traffic was flowing on the freeway by 10:00 on Saturday morning.  The time lapse video show highlights of the SPMT move for both bridge spans.
