The following is taken from the horror novel “Pandora 2014: Blood Drive”. In this speech, an expert on Pandora explains how he uses his familiarity with magic to keep his girlfriend happy.
I slip an arm around my girlfriend Dina’s waist, and hold my face inches from hers. It’s Friday night. Everyone wants a new experience. You can hear the restless boredom in the drone of the cicadas, see the impatient blinking of lightning bugs, and feel the pressure of the humidity. The world itself is begging for a tickle.
My own interests are genuine. There’s a true fondness here, but I still question the morality of my next act.
When people see me and Dina, an unspoken question presents itself. They look at me—a disheveled New Yorker, basically a walking street rat, then look at her—trim, magnetic, the right curves, an eager smile. Everyone who comes across us, I’m sure, wonders what glue binds us together. What is this catch doing with that derelict?
I wear suits. I have an edge to me. I make a decent living. All these pluses still can’t add up to how I keep a woman like Dina.
So here’s my secret. I get her high. As soon as the doors close and we’re alone, I play my only ace—a direct line to a Pandora drug called Hot Potato. Our after-hours lifestyle starts with a slice of yam I score from Pandora’s Box.
I kick off my shoes, take Dina’s arm, and lead her to the bedroom. A large set of windows opens up to reveal Bareneck Forest. In the distance, I hear the relentless flow of the river.
From the dresser, I produce a small wooden case. I draw a slice of the magical potato and divide it, one side much larger than the other.
Dina rubs her hands across my chest, her eyes bright with anticipation, her only thoughts, I imagine, on the kaleidoscope of possibilities.
When visitors dare the former Crescent Beach Mall, the outcome of their tour is invariably tied to their own moral fiber. The Box essentially enhances whatever someone already is. Since this potato is grown on the land surrounding Pandora, its alchemy performs in the same capacity. It’s a brand of cosmic litmus paper, twisting the mind to match the spirit.
So as I place the larger portion between my teeth, and lean in for Dina to take it from me with her own, a bubble of apprehension forms low in my stomach.
