Feed The Flame: Fire In Snow

We’ve marched on into a new year! The celebration and feasting of Yuletide is but a fleeting memory after all that drunken mead. Our journey leads us through a snowy slope, where despite many layers of wool the cold still bitterly cuts. At a lonely pine tree we’ve noticed a large patch of dry grass. This grass is perfect for kindling, so we stuff it in our sleeve. Our own heat dries the grass further, while providing additional isolation. We found a dried pine branch, smell it and immediately recognize it contains fatwood. Fatwood is resin impregnated heartwood. Resin soaked wood is the most reliable natural fire starter. It’s wind and water resistant and burns hot enough to light larger pieces of wood.

On our way through the woods we notice trails of wild game. The key to starting a fire in snowy conditions is a proper first kindling. To keep our frozen fingers warm, we gather small twigs and branches along the way, which we conceal under our tunic or in a hood in order to keep it dry.
Wherever we notice injuries on spruces, or pines we scrape off resin to enhance flames and produce a pleasant aromatic scent. We start gathering the lower branches of a spruce, for they are dry and elevated enough from the ground and thus not in direct contact with the snow below. A dry branch makes a distinct “crack” when broken. Such a branch is adequate as it does not smother the fire with moisture and excess smoke.

When we select a location to start a fire, we trample the snow there and around it. Firstly we set up a foundation from branches, upon which we spread our firewood logs. From the dry grass we design a fire nest in which we add pieces of fatwood to produce a proper kindling starter. Using flint and steel we produce sparks, which we try to catch on a piece of char cloth. Once the char cloth has been ignited, we place in onto the fire nest, then gently blow on it to produce a flame.

Once we get a fire going we use it to warm ourselves and replenish some energy to continue on our journey.  Whilst or clothes are drying and our body keeps warming, we use the time we have and make some snobrod. Snobrod dough is made from flour, water, a bit of honey and a pinch of salt. We mix these ingredients well, until the dough is smooth and flexible. Once that is done we roll the dough with our hands, wrap in around a branch and bake it slowly over a fire. Cranberries go extremely well with snobrod, for that additional boost of energy.
