On July 5, 2017, then-Police Officer Miosotis P. Familia was sitting in the front seat of a police vehicle after her overnight shift when a man snuck up to her car window and shot a bullet into her, killing the 12-year veteran of the force. She was assassinated without warning by a career criminal named Alexander Bonds, a lone parolee who hated police and had a history of mental illness. His priors included convictions for robbery, assaulting a Police Officer, and selling drugs near a school. After a short foot chase, responding Officers from the 46 shot and killed Bonds.

Officer Familia — a single mother raising three children and caring for her own aging mother — was appointed to the force in 2005. She is one of the very few female Officers of the NYPD killed in the line of duty in a combat death. She was mourned by law enforcement and the public the world over. Officers from across the globe travelled to her Bronx funeral to pay their respects. She was promoted posthumously to Detective First Grade by Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill. Her death came two-and-a-half years after the similar assassination of Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, killed for simply wearing the blue uniform.
