Underage College Student Arrested for OVI as the Designated Driver

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, LUCAS COUNTY, OH
SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, LUCAS COUNTY, OH - On September 3rd, 2023 at 1:08AM, an officer with the Sylvania Township Police Department observed a vehicle traveling at night with their parking lights on only. The vehicle then merged onto I-475 heading southbound without signaling. As the officer activated his emergency lights, the vehicle pulled over across all lanes of traffic and on the opposite side of the road while still fully within the outside lane.
The officer then spoke to the suspect who claimed that her and her friends were coming from a restaurant and heading back to a city over 20 miles away. The officer eventually asked the suspect to step out of the vehicle to which she complied. When questioned, the suspect denied drinking in the night and claimed that she had smoked pre-rolls that had no marijuana in them. The officer then began to perform a standardized field sobriety test. During the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, the suspect displayed a lack of smooth pursuit, nystagmus prior to 45 degrees, and distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation. Vertical nystagmus was not observed.
Upon the conclusion of the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, the suspect claimed that she had consumed 1/3 of a solo cup with a mixed drink. For the walk-and-turn test, the suspect did not touch heel-to-toe on all of her steps and completed an improper turn removing her lead foot from the line. During the one leg stand test, the suspect picked her foot up before being instructed to begin and counted improperly starting from the number 14.
The suspect then consented to a preliminary breath test which yielded a result of .101g ethanol/210L. This is above five times the legal limit of .02g ethanol/210L to drive in the State of Ohio if under 21 years of age. The suspect was then arrested for operating vehicle under the influence, or OVI, and brought to the Sylvania Township Police Department for further processing.
