OVI Suspect Crashes Girlfriend's Car While Going to Pick Her up from Work

BEACHWOOD, OH - On May 20th, 2020 at 11:25PM, officers with the Pepper Pike Police Department were dispatched to Interstate 271 for a vehicle accident involving a motorcycle. Upon arrival, the officer began speaking to a witness of the accident who claimed that the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash was not doing well. The officer was later informed from bystanders that the vehicle had hit a barrier on their side of the interstate, then circled back by crossing the median and into the local lanes of traffic.
After searching the suspect, a sergeant discovered that the suspect had an unresolved court case regarding operating a vehicle under the influence, or OVI, in a different city approximately 30 minutes away from the scene of the accident. The suspect was eventually asked to step out of the squad car to perform a field sobriety test whereupon he admitted to drinking earlier in the evening. The suspect further claimed that he was on his way to pick up his girlfriend from her place of employment when the accident occurred.
During the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, the suspect displayed a lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus, and nystagmus onset prior to 45 degrees in both eyes. For the walk-and-turn test, the suspect had to be told to remain in the starting position until told to begin, stopped multiple times to balance himself, missed heel-to-toe on several steps, made an improper turn, and stepped off line to catch his balance on his way back. Of note, the wind was moderately blowing during the test.
During the one leg stand test, the wind had picked up and the suspect used his arms to balance himself. At the conclusion of the test, the suspect was arrested for OVI, had his person searched, and was placed in the back of the officer's squad car. He was then taken to the Beachwood Municipal Complex Jail for further OVI processing.
