McAllen's first decade was the time for getting established and laying down a foundation for what was yet to come.
McAllen's second decade, the 1920's was a building boom...
1921 the high school newspaper, "The Pioneer" becomes "The Wheel" and is printed in The Monitor newspaper.
A furniture store opens up on HWY 83, and mondern conveniences can now be purchased downtown.
But hazards come along with progress, in 1924 Sacred Heart Church burns down completly.
But the first real hospital is built off South Broadway, with room for 25 patients and replacing the city's only clinic, the home of Dr. Doss on Hackberry Avenue.
In 1925 the first City Hall and Fire Station opened on Austin Avenue and the first swimming pool on South 10th street.
The next yeart the First International Bridge to Reynosa opened on July 10th and Sacred Heart was rebuilt on the ashes of the old church.
In 1927 the Southern Pacific Railroad arrives to serve passengers and freight.
Roosevelt Elementary opened on Galveston Avenue and the Masonic Lodge was built on North 11th and McAllen became a Home Rule City.
In the 1930's, McAllen's official  population was 9,074, Sam Miller donated 300 acres of land for the McAllen Airport and Valhalla Cemetary changed it's name to Roselawn.
