McAllen's population in 1950 was 20,067, almost doubling since 1940.
The late 1940's proved to be a growth and building boom unseen or thought of in the early 40's but McAllen hadn't been through the 1050's yet.
The 1950's began with McAllen sowing the seeds to become a modern american city.
The runway expansions at the airport were finished and Trans Texas Airlines was flying in and out and in 1956 it would become an international airport.
The bus station on South 16th began operations with one bus line and soon had three others.
New car dealerships were opening up and Dwight Eisenhower toured through town on his way to dedicate Falcon Dam up river.
The new and ultra-modern 1st National Bank opened at 15th and Beaumont.
There were over 90 manufacturing, processing, canning, industrial plants and cotton gins in town.
We got out first drive in movie theatre.
The decade would end with two very big actions, the new McAllen Civic Center was built at a cost of over a million dollars, the auditorium could seat over 16-hundred people and the city purchased the american side of the International Bridge at Hidalgo.
McAllen was now the place to go to for touring broadway style shows and entertainment and soon to be the place to be for establishing international business relations for the future.
