Maharashtra Day | Why was Maharashtra State formed? How did Bombay become part of Maharashtra?
The formation of Maharashtra happened on the 1st of May 1960 after a long struggle led by the people. Maharashtra and Gujarat both were part of one single state called the Bombay State. But as the demand grew for two separate states, the government had to carve out the new states of Maharashtra and Gujarat.
During the freedom struggle, the government promised the people to create new states based on the regional language spoken after India gained independence. However, the government decided not to go ahead with its plan to form new States after independence. But then, that was not to be. The formation of new states based on language did happen. What was the government worried about? Why did Gujarat and Maharashtra both want Bombay? Know the story behind what led to the formation of one of the largest states of India, Maharashtra.
