The states of Maharashtra and Gujarat were once a single state known as the state of Bombay under the British. Upon independence, there were demands to create separate states of Gujarat and Maharashtra on the basis of language. The centre didn't want this but appointed several commissions to look into this matter. Finally, when protests grew from both the Marathi and Gujarati sides, the centre divided the state of Bombay into Maharashtra and Gujarat on May 1,1960.
