In the video above, the child is making choices with a high-tech AAC device, and the teacher is modeling use of the device. When a child uses AAC, you should frequently model communication on the AAC device (much the same way that we model verbal language for children learning to verbally communicate!) If the child uses gestures or body language to indicate that he wants an item or activity, immediately prompt the child to request the item using his AAC device. When a child uses the AAC device, respond to the communication right away by providing the requested item/activity and responding verbally. Watch in the video above how the teacher (a) models communication frequently, (b) prompts AAC communication when the child whines or reaches for a toy, and (c) responds promptly to all communication.
