Hey, guys, it's Jake here with etrailer.  Today we have a 2024 GMC Sierra 3500 and we're gonna be taking a look at and I'm gonna show you how to install the Hopkins fifth wheel and gooseneck in-bed wiring kit.  And when you're thinking about installing a gooseneck or a fifth wheel in the bed of your truck or if you already have one, installing an in-bed wiring kit in my personal opinion, is going to be a must.  The only other way to run wiring to your fifth wheel or gooseneck trailer is to run that wire over top of your tailgate.  And what that can do is over time you'll get some, especially on a white truck like we have here, you'll get some black marks, the cord itself could get rubbed, many, many times when you're turning the vibrations of the cord hitting the paint job could rub the paint off your truck.  There's many different things that could happen.

We've even seen sometimes people forget to undo the wire and they go to unhook from their trailer and their wire gets pulled out, ripped out of the seven pole down on the bumper.  Installing this is a very, very safe option for when you hook up to your trailer whether it's a gooseneck or a fifth wheel.  While you're in here, you make all your connections that you need for your trailer, grab your wire, and plug it right in.  Now, as far as the installation goes that's what makes this kit so great.  It's super, super easy to get installed, especially if you have the factory prep package, which has this opening for the wire to just run right through it.

You don't have to drill a hole.  If your truck does not have that, you will have to drill a small hole to be able to fit the wiring through it.  But when it comes to this kit I do recommend getting the CURT adapter and essentially all it's going to do is take up the rest of the space because our plug being the Hopkins plug is just going to cover the round portion at the bottom of the plug.  You'll need something to cover up the top half too.  But essentially all it's gonna do is plug into the back of your seven pole wiring, use those functions up in the bed of your truck.

To begin our installation we'll need to take a trim panel tool or a screwdriver and we'll need to pop out this pre-made plug here.  It's just a cap for the factory one.  The owner of this vehicle did not opt for the factory prep package.  So it comes with the opening here.  It does not come with the plug itself.

And pop that out, set it to the side, 'cause we will not be using it.  We're gonna take our wiring harness and feed it down through the opening.  We will feed all this wiring down there.  We'll be tying the excess up underneath the vehicle.  Now we're gonna be using the CURT adapter with this.  And essentially all it's designed to do is take up the rest of the space.  As you can see, the opening in our truck is gonna be much larger than the Hopkins plug.  So we'll take that adapter, slide it over our wiring, then take our connector and just plug it in.  Make sure it clicks. Slide it over.  We'll take this.  Slide it into the hole.  Then our CURT adapter will pop into place.  Then we can take our self-tapping screws and screw it in place.  (equipment whirring) Now you want to take your wiring, route it up.  I like to take it over top of the bracket there.  Actually, I might go over top of the frame rail.  Over the frame rail I just like to get it out of the way as much as possible to help prevent any collateral damage later on if you decide to drive through some brush or something like that you just want to get it tied up and outta the way.  You want to disconnect your seven pole.  So you pull back on that little gray tab.  Pop it out.  And then this can only be connected one way so you can't do it wrong.  Push it in.  Feel a slight click in there.  Push that gray tab back in.  And take our new plug and reconnect it.  Now we just have to get our wires tied up out of the way.  This big spool here, I just like to coil it up and then I'm going to stick it behind this support here and then zip tie it off.  Now we'll go ahead and test out the lighting functions and make sure that our seven pole is working properly.  Start out with our left blinker.  Our right blinker.  Brake lights.  And our headlights.  After you know everything's working properly that's gonna do it for the installation.  Hopefully this video will help you decide whether or not the Hopkins in-bed wiring kit is right for you and your 2024 GMC 3500.
