The hormone melatonin, which is naturally produced by the body, plays an important role in controlling our sleep-wake cycle, or circadian rhythm. But people who have trouble sleeping for different reasons often take melatonin as a supplement.
Data from experiments showed that melatonin increases tyrosine phosphorylation of insulin receptors and stimulates secretion of insulin growth factor. Melatonin supplementation may be able to reverse glucose intolerance and insulin resistance brought on by disruption of the internal circadian system.
Having a low melatonin level during the day and after eating is optimal for glucose tolerance. High levels of melatonin during overnight fasting and sleep have also been linked to improved pancreatic cell function. Both of these things assist keep people from developing type 2 diabetes.
Many people who suffer from sleeplessness also struggle with type 2 diabetes. A study conducted by Israeli scientists looked at the effects of 2 mg of prolonged-release melatonin on glucose, lipid metabolism, and sleep quality in 36 people with type 2 diabetes and insomnia.
The researchers found that persons with type 2 diabetes and insomnia benefited from short-term treatment with prolonged-release melatonin, and that this treatment had no negative effects on blood glucose or lipid metabolism. However, A1c levels are improved by long-term, prolonged-release melatonin, suggesting better glycemic management.
Melatonin, however, can interact with other medications, including blood pressure medication, diabetic medication, contraceptives, and immunosuppressants. Melatonin should only be taken if your doctor says it's okay to do so.
