Traditionally, children are told to just memorise high-frequency words, and learn them by 'sight'.
However, latest research about how children learn to read shows there are better ways for teaching these high-frequency words.
This video explains how you can go about it. In general, there is a disconnect between high frequency words instruction and phonics instruction. That is a mistake.
A much more effective (and a kinder / more enjoyable way as well for kids!) way is to teach these words using of phonics, phonemic awareness, controlled introduction to the high-frequency words, logic and orthographic mapping.
