Quantum Chemistry 8.1 - Variational Principle

Short lecture on the variational principle in quantum mechanics.

The variational principle states that the energy of any approximate wavefunction is greater than or equal to the energy of the true ground-state wavefunction. The lower the energy, the better the approximation to the true ground-state.
