Short lecture on the linear variational method in quantum mechanics.

The linear variational method uses a trial wavefunction which is a linear combination of basis functions, with the coefficients as the variational parameters. Minimizing the energy with respect to the parameters results in the matrix Schrodinger equation, which can be solved by using the secular determinant.
