it's sad girl summer and there are sad women on all the covers. let's talk about how the 'sad girl lit' trope / trend permeates media and how it influences the design so you can make your own sad millennial lit book cover (v serious tutorial, completely step-by-step please take this seriously).
“millenial intimacy”, “female despair”, the “afflicted woman”, “sad girl lit”, “hot-mess-millenial”, “sad girl summer”, “literary sad woman” ... women having emotions in fiction has so many names I’m not sure the British museum would be able to keep up with it. whatever you’d like to call it, women are having a blast on lit fic covers right now.
so I wanted to break down these break downs. why are women having emotions?
People love labelling complex people in a branded identity from the 'that girl', the 'clean girl', the 'it girl', the 'manic pixie dream girl', the 'girlboss' and now we also have the 'sad girl'.
Let's talk about the history of the 'sad girl' trope in all it's versions from Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey, Phoebe Bridgers to Fleabag; the 'tumblr sad girl' and now the sad millennial woman.
