Isn't it simply wonderful that there are so many types of games on the video game spectrum? From the fun and the frolicking... all the way to the hellishly hardcore. But in and around the cracks of these games there lies the essence of something darker and off-centre. Well, we're here to talk about them. Here are our top five depressing video games.
5. Depression Quest - Zoë Quinn
Generally, a bold title that sums up the entirety of your creation doesn't indicate good things. Take Bad Boys II, for example. And then there's Depression Quest, which is exactly as it says on the tin. But this isn't the video game equivalent of Bad Boys II. It's a deeply personal, visceral reality check and interactive depiction of the dreaded way of life for so many.
4. Heavy Rain - Quantic Dream
Arguably David Cage's finest work, Heavy Rain takes complete control of the player's emotions. Seamlessly blending player actions and decisions with often crushing inevitabilities, it's a rollercoaster of doom. Unlike so many games, the characters aren't invincible and boy do you feel it. You could say they're human, in fact. Rain must fall, but in Heavy Rain it's pouring.
3. The Graveyard - Tale of Tales
Jokes about old people and graveyards aside, The Graveyard is a game that really thrusts the feebleness of life into the foreground. A bleak and grim, yet stunning ten minutes of reflection, this is a game that'll either make you cry or leave you puzzled. Either way, you've just experienced something that'll be stuck in your head for days.
2. Silent Hill 2 - Konami
'Doom' is perhaps the best word to describe Silent Hill 2. Before even booting the game up, you just know that horrible things are going to happen that'll break the protagonist. And they do. Even with multiple endings, there is no truly happy ending. Except for the joke one with the dog, perhaps. This game will leave you feeling like shit for sure.
1. Shadow of the Colossus - Team Ico
What is the number one rule that both life and video games instil into us? When you come across something bigger than you are, it needs to die. The Colossi are no exception to this rule. And then it dawns on you: there's absolutely no reason for you to be killing these harmless, peaceful creatures other than for your own selfish greed and gain. That speaks volumes.
