Lucio Tan born in Fujian Province China in 1934, immigrated to Naga in the Philippines when he was 4.  The eldest of 8 children, he started work at age 11.  While studying for chemical engineering at Far Eastern University, he worked as janitor.  He dropped out of university to found a scrap metal business which failed.  In 1966 he founded Fortune Tobacco.  In 1977 he bought a bankrupt bank and renamed it Allied Bank.  Soon he started Asia Brewery in 1982, with only competition San Miguel.  He also owned Philippines Airline.  Lesson if you fail, try again.
