In this video, Catherine & Sebastian discuss the new tax in Dubai, which has recently put a spanner in the works for expats in Dubai. What are the consequences? What exemptions are there? What are alternatives to the UA?

= Background =
Since June 1, 2023, self-employed persons, freelancers and companies based in the United Arab Emirates have to pay 9% profit tax on all profits over the equivalent of around 100,000 euros. Small businesses with a turnover of less than the equivalent of around 750,000 euros are exempt from the tax.

The fact that practically 99% of all free zone companies (FZEs) are also affected by the tax was only announced on the day of its introduction and hits many like a slap in the face. Initial drafts of the law still stated that those FZEs that only generate turnover abroad would be exempt from the tax. But this is definitely not the case.

For most clients, the UAE will no longer be a viable location. Of course, Dubai is still attractive as a place of residence. There is still no income tax. However, anyone who moved to the UAE to do business there and pay no tax is now faced with a pile of rubble and can start all over again.

However, there are several alternatives to a life in the UAE and a free zone company in Dubai, where entrepreneurs can set up and operate companies in a tax-efficient manner - at lower costs and with far less effort than was already the case in Dubai.
