Correctly Stripping Coax Cable

If you are planning on striping coax cables, make sure that you use the proper tools. For this project, we’ll be using two types of tools from our production facility, a compact wire striper, and a ring slit tool. The first step is to measure the cable to the correct length. Make sure to add at least an extra inch. Once we have our measurement, we’ll use the compact wire stripper to cleanly slice through the cable in one clean motion. This tool offers multiple crimp nests to handle a wide range of wire sizes. It also has a tapered plier nose that can be used to grip, twist, bend, or pull. Lastly, this tool offers a sharp cutting blade ideal for cutting solid and stranded wires as large as 10 gauge. Now we need to get past the insulation and the dielectric material. For this, we’ll use our ring slit tool. By looking at the blade we can see this tool cuts both the insulation and dielectric material at the same time. We’ll open the tool and place the cable into the trough allowing the tool to close. As we work the tool around, you will feel the insulation give. We are now able to remove both the outer insulation and the dielectric material without damaging the internal shield. This tool works with Cat cable as well as multiple styles of coaxial cable. It also has a spare compartment for different blade types. With the proper tools, you can safely cut and strip coax cable while eliminating the risk of damage to the internal conductor.
