This week's double Parashah:
"Matot - Masei" (Tribes - Journeys) - Numbers 30:2 - 36:13
Today’s Drash by: Nick Vetter
In this Parasha, we read of the conclusion of the journey of the children of Israel from Egypt to the point before they entered into the Promised Land. This moment signifies more than the conclusion of a physical journey; it represents the beginning of receiving a profound spiritual inheritance.
In the Torah portion “Matot” we read about Moses’ final battle against the Midianites before he dies. But once again, we see that Israel did not do as they were instructed because they spared the Midianite women who “caused” the men to be unfaithful to God. The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half-tribe of Manasseh came to inherit the land east of the Jordan River.
In the Torah portion “Masei” these tribes promise to help out the other tribes. In the final reading of the book of Numbers we also find instructions for apportioning the land, as well as the specifics regarding the borders of the land. Then Moses introduces the laws of the cities of refuge and more inheritance laws.
God’s promises are eternal; let us be encouraged to trust in God’s promises and live in the hope of His grace, knowing that He is faithful to fulfill His word.
