This week's Parashah:
"Va'etchanan" (And I Pleaded) - Deuteronomy 3:23 - 7:11
Today’s Drash by: Mike Cohen
In this Torah portion, Moses was nearing the end of his life and pleaded with God to be allowed to enter the Promised Land, but God refused Moses’ request. God still loved Moses and used him despite his mistakes. Even in Moses' old age, the Lord graciously gave him one last job: He told Moses to pass the baton. He told him to train Joshua in his place in order to lead the people into the Promised Land.
In this portion, Moses repeats the Ten Commandments and utters the Shema and Ve’ahavta prayers, and stresses to the Israelites the importance of keeping God’s commandments when they enter the Land of Israel.
It’s important that we understand our limitations and accept the things we cannot change when God allows or doesn’t allow certain things in our lives. We don't always get what we ask for. Even when we ask with the right motives, God still might have to say no. If God gave us everything we asked for in prayer, it would be the same as giving us the power of being God.
