What is plyometric training? TWhilst there's a lot of confusion around the topic of plyometric training, it's not as complicated as you think, once you understand the basic principles of plyometrics.

This video discusses
- Intro to Plyometric training 00:00:00
- Before asking what is plyometric training let's understand the SSC (stretch-shortening cycle)  00:00:33

Plyometric Training Explained: What is Plyometric Training?

Plyometrics and plyometric training are synonyms and can be used interchangeably. Plyometric training is a form of training that makes use of the so-called stretch-shortening cycle, which leads to a stronger response from the nervous system as well as a stronger response from the muscular system.

Plyometric Training Definition

In the scientific literature the definition of plyometric training varies from author to author, and is not always congruent.

Earlier definitions of Plyometrics / Plyometric Training entailed the following information:

'Plyometrics, also known as "jump training" or "plyos", are exercises in which muscles exert maximum force in short intervals of time, with the goal of increasing power (speed-strength). Plyometric Training has an effect on Sprinting, Jumping and Speed and Agility due to its’ training effect on the fast twitch muscle fibres.'

However, a more accurate definition of Plyometric Training or Plyometrics is:

‘Plyometrics or Plyometric Training is a training that involves the stretch-shortening cycle as a means to improve speed and power.’

The Stretch-shortening Cycle explained

Plyometrics or plyometric training is closely related to the stretch-shortening cycle (SSC), but what is the stretch-shortening cycle?
The stretch-shortening cycles (SSC) is a rapid stretch of the muscles followed by a strong contraction of the same muscles.
It is an involuntary protective reflex to protect the muscles from tearing.

The stretch-shortening cycle can be divided into
- A short stretch-shortening cycle: contact times of less than 180 – 200 ms
- A long stretch-shortening cycle: contact times of more than 180 – 200 ms

Plyometrics Exercises to design the Plyometrics workout

Plyometrics exercises or plyos can be classified as lower body plyometrics or lower body plyos and upper body plyometrics or upper body plyos.

As discussed, the stretch-shortening cycle can be divided into a short SSC and a long SSC, consequently we also have
- Short stretch-shortening plyos or plyometrics exercises
- Long stretch-shortening plyos or plyometrics exercises

Different training modes can be used for plyometrics exercises and plyometric workouts, ranging from bodyweight to medicine balls and dumbbells and barbells.

Plyometrics can be trained with different training modes, from bodyweight to light implements such as Medicine Balls, Kettle Bells, Dumbbells, Barbells, etc

Important here is to realize that during the end phase of the plyometric exercise, the training mode, the body or object goes into a free flight mode, also known as ballistic.

Plyometric Training Explained: What is Plyometric Training Conclusion

Plyometrics or Plyometric training is a training form which makes use of stretch-shortening cycle to elicit a stronger stimulus on the nervous system  and the muscles.

The stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) can be divided into a short SSC and a long SSC.

Plyometrics exercises or plyos can be performed for the upper body (upper body plyos) and for the lower body (lower body plyos). These plyos can also be sub-divided into short SSC plyos and long SSC plyos.

Plyometrics exercises are performed with a variety of different training modes, such as bodyweight, medicine balls, dumbbells, kettle bells or barbells.
