The Donkey Tail Jr bait by Mule has become my go-to for numbers and quality.

The purpose of this video is to point out one thing: The average ultralight angler is using cheap and dull jigheads for their soft plastic lures. We have all done it. Simply put, the basic jigheads we grew up using will do the job… but compare that cutting vegetables with a knife that has a crappy blade. It’s going to be less enjoyable and less productive.

In America, the most common species caught ultralight fishing are the bluegill/sunfish species. With proper jigheads and the right plastic bait, your numbers can skyrocket with this ideal equation.

The two jigheads I feature in this video is the iFish BG-1 (1 gram size 12 hook) and the JDM Daiwa Gekkabijin Ajing jigheads (assorted weights and sizes). You can find a link to the BG-1 jighead by heading over to i_fish’s YouTube channel. The Daiwa JDM jigheads are found on sites like Asian Portal Fishing, etc. I recommend trying both. These two jigheads are not the only solution by any means, but they are the best of the best. People ask for my insight and I will only recommend the best products.

I discovered this missing link after years of losing big spotted bass on ultralight tackle. I lost so many spots on UL, that I gave up on it and settled for mostly 8-12 lb line applications. In actuality, the jig heads I was used to using growing up were the culprit. They do not effective drive into the fish and keep them pinned. Thick, dull hooks come out very easy after many runs and head shakes.

These modern jigheads are extremely sharp with just the right about of thickness to get great hook penetration with minimal exertion from the rod/angler.

The other key component is hook size. For true ultralight fishing, these light wire hooks in size 12 for bluegill and 8 for crappie/bass have been the sweet spot for me. Size 12 hooks for bluegill are so much more effective, I would say your catch numbers probably double (if not more). I also seem to do pretty decent landing bigger fish than bluegill on these jigheads. Keep your drag set properly and fight the fish appropriately.

SUMMARY: Use a sharp, thin wire jighead hook and your numbers caught and landed will skyrocket.
