There is much more to speaking English like a native speaker than just saying the sounds of American English correctly. You have to use the correct American English rhythm and reductions that English native speakers use too. In this pronunciation video tutorial I teach you how to use a few common reductions in American English that you’ll hear from native English speakers.

Common reductions help you sound more like a native English speaker. Common reductions will make your pronunciation sound more natural and casual as you speak English, and less robotic and sounding too formal. In this short video tutorial I show you the second part of how to use common reductions in American English pronunciation in order to know how to sound like a native English speaker.

Let’s continue! Here are some examples of common reductions in American English pronunciation:

and:
In American English pronunciation we don’t usually pronounce the word “and” fully when we speak English—it’s only pronounced fully when we are emphasizing and stressing the word “and”. The common reduction for the word “and” is the /n/ sound. For example, in the sentence “pass the salt and pepper”, you would pronounce it “pass the salt ‘n pepper”.

or:
You’ll notice that the common reduction of the word “or” is the sound /r/ in American English pronunciation when native English speakers use it in connected speech. For example, in the sentence “would you like coffee or tea?” you would pronounce it as “would you like coffee ‘r tea?” However, the word “or” can be pronounced fully when you want to emphasize and stress it.

The next American English common reduction I teach you is the word “for”. The common reduction for “for” is pronounced in American English pronunciation like /fer/ in connected speech. For example, in the sentence “what do you do for a living?” you would pronounced it as “what do you do ‘fer’ a living?”
