There is much more to speaking English like a native speaker than just saying the sounds of American English correctly. You have to use the correct American English rhythm and reductions that English native speakers use too. In this pronunciation video tutorial I teach you how to use a few common reductions in American English that you’ll hear from native English speakers.

Common reductions help you sound more like a native English speaker. Common reductions will make your pronunciation sound more natural and casual as you speak English, and less robotic and sounding too formal. In this short video tutorial I show you the third part of how to use common reductions in American English pronunciation in order to know how to sound like a native English speaker.

Let’s continue! Here are some examples of common reductions in American English pronunciation:

The word “you”:
The word “you” is commonly reduced to /yuh/, but I personally like to pronounce it without the common reduction. The common reduction of the word “you” is very casual and can be appropriate in casual conversation. When native English speakers speak and are in a casual environment or conversation, they may say, “Hey, how have you been?” In this example it would be pronounced “Hey, how have ‘yuh’ been?”

The word “to”:
A lot of times native English speakers pronounce the word “to” as /tuh/. This common reduction is used frequently. For example, in the sentence “I have to go” a native English speaker would pronounce it like this, “I have ‘tuh’ go”. Another example is “It’s important to remember”, which would be pronounced “It’s important ‘tuh’ remember”. Notice how I pronounce the word “important” in my how to tutorial video. Knowing how to pronounce the word “important” is important. :) We will talk more about this—the topic of the glottal stop—in another tutorial video I’ll post on my YouTube channel in the future.

Normally speaking, the reason why we reduce a certain word is because that word isn’t been stressed in the sentence—it’s not a stressed word. However, if any of the commonly reduced words is stressed in a sentence, then make sure to pronounce that stressed word fully without reducing it.
