India has told Canada it must repatriate 41 of its 62 diplomats according to the Financial Times and The Associated Press on Tuesday, as diplomatic tensions between the two countries deepen.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has not confirmed the reports but said these are "extremely challenging" times and emphasized the importance of having diplomats in India.

Global News has not yet verified the reports but has reached out to Global Affairs Canada.

The removal would escalate a confrontation between the two countries over Canada's accusations that India may have been involved in the June murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, B.C.
