Mount Langshan (崀山) is a prominent mountain and scenic area located in Xinning County, Hunan (湖南), China. It is renowned for its unique geological formations and breathtaking landscapes, earning it a spot as a "world famous UNESCO geopark of China." The peak of Mount Langshan stands at an elevation of 818 meters (2,684 feet). This area is part of the China Danxia World Heritage Site, recognized in 2010 for its outstanding natural beauty and geological significance.
Throughout its history, Mount Langshan has received several designations, highlighting its importance both nationally and internationally. In 2000, it was named a "National Rock Climbing Training Base" by the General Administration of Sport of China. By 2001, it was classified as a "National Geological Park" by the Ministry of Land and Resources, and in 2002, it was authorized as a "National Key Scenic Spot." Further recognition came in 2006 when it was inscribed to the National Natural Heritage List by the Ministry of Construction. Reflecting its growing popularity and conservation importance, it was categorized as an AAAA level tourist site in 2010 by the China National Tourism Administration, and in 2016, it achieved the highest rating as an AAAAA level tourist site.
The natural history of Mount Langshan is as diverse as it is rich, home to 26 species of mammals, 94 species of birds, 35 species of reptiles, 19 species of amphibians, 36 species of fish, about 816 species of insects, over 1,421 vascular plant species, and 150 fungus species. The Fuyi River, a tributary of the Zi River, flows through the area, adding to its ecological diversity.
Tourist attractions within Mount Langshan include the Pepper Peak and Camel Peak Scenic Area, Danxia Linear Valley, and the First Line in the World, each offering unique vistas and experiences that highlight the natural beauty and geological wonders of the region.
Mount Langshan's recognition as part of the China Danxia World Heritage Site underscores its global significance, preserving its unique landscapes for future generations while offering a window into the natural beauty and geological diversity of Hunan, China.
