Drive to a small, remote mountain village in western Hunan Province, China

Phoenix Ancient City, located in the southwest of Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Hunan Province, covers an area of about 10 square kilometers, composed of 28 ethnic groups such as Miao, Han and Tujia, and is a typical ethnic minority inhabited area.
It is located in the south of the Wuling Mountains and the east side of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, and is named after the green mountains that resemble a phoenix with wings ready to fly. The ancient city of Phoenix was built in the 43rd year of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty (1704), and the ancient city buildings of the east gate and the north gate are still there. The bluestone slab streets, the wooden stilted buildings by the riverside, as well as the Chaoyang Palace, the Ancient City Museum, the Yang Family Ancestral Hall, the former residence of Shen Congwen, the former residence of Xiong Xiling, the Tianwang Temple, the Dacheng Palace, the Wanshou Palace and other buildings all reveal the characteristics of the ancient city. There are 68 cultural relics and ancient buildings, 116 ancient ruins, more than 120 characteristic dwellings in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and more than 30 temples and pavilions in the ancient city, which is the county with the most existing cultural relics and buildings in southwest China.
In 2001, Phoenix Ancient City was awarded the title of National Historical and Cultural City, which is a famous historical and cultural city in China, a national AAAA-level scenic spot, and one of the top ten cultural heritage sites in Hunan. On May 25, 2006, Phoenix Ancient Castle was announced by the State Council as the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
In October 2019, Phoenix Ancient City was selected into the first list of "Small Town Aesthetic Model".

Liangdeng Village is located in the north of Shanjiang Town, 15 kilometers away from the seat of the town government, and is a relatively remote, traffic congestion, complex terrain and relatively poor pure Miao village. There are five natural villages, 5 villager groups, 159 households, 816 people, 18 party members, and 489 laborers (including 298 migrant workers). The cultivated land area is 711 acres (including 545 acres of paddy fields and 166 acres of dry land), the per capita grain yield is 271 kilograms, and the mountain forests are 14,149.5 acres (including 3,118.5 acres of farmland returned to forests, 185.4 acres of ecological forests, and 1,264 acres of public welfare forests). Tobacco is the pillar industry of the village, with a per capita net income of 1,240 yuan in 2010, making it a low-income poor village.
