Welcome back to ‘the bible says what’.  Today I will summarize Proverbs chapter 20, which contains 30 of Solomon’s proverbs.  Just like in some of the previous videos, I will give you a small sample of these.  Hopefully you will spend some time and read them for yourself.
Solomon wrote: Wine, beer, and liquor are deceivers.  The person who is tricked and led astray by drinking them is a fool.  Every fool is quick to quarrel, but the wise man tries to avoid strife.  Many people claim to be faithful, but there are few who actually are.    Who can say they are pure, clean, and sinless?  No one.  But the righteous are blameless in God’s eyes, and their children are blessed after them. Even children are known by their actions.  Words are cheap. Do not love sleep or you will grow poor.  Stay awake and work and you will have food to spare.
Solomon continued:  Gold and rubies are not common, but someone who speaks with wisdom and knowledge is much more rare. The king’s wrath is terrible.  Whoever angers him forfeits their life.   If you are in charge of a country and you think you may need to go to war, make sure you seek much advice from wise counsel before that happens.  A wise king will harvest the wicked from his kingdom and will crush them to powder with the grinding wheel.  Blows and wounds scrub away evil, and discipline with a rod purges the spirit.    Love and faithfulness will keep a king safe.  His throne is made secure with love.
Solomon taught: do not repay evil for evil.  Do not take revenge.  Wait for the Lord.  He will judge the situation and will avenge you if you were indeed wronged.  Do you trust Him to do that?  A person’s steps are directed by the Lord.  No one can really understand their own way.  Do not make vows too quickly or you may regret them. Avoid anyone who talks too much, or you will be slandered.   If someone curses their father or mother, they will be snuffed out and thrown into outer darkness.Young men’s glory is their strength, and grey hair is the splendor of the old man.  The human spirit is the lamp of the Lord, it sheds light in a person’s inmost being.
The most important verse in this chapter is Proverbs 20:11 which states, ‘Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.’
The thing I think the Lord wants us to understand after reading this chapter is that it would be wise for people not to drink wine, beer, or hard liquor because it will deceive them and will trick them into doing things they wouldn’t otherwise do.  He wants people to know that the righteous are blameless in His eyes, even though they are not sinless.  God wants leaders of nations to remove wickedness from the land they rule over and punish it with a heavy hand.  God wants people to never take revenge but to entrust themselves to Him who judges justly.  He will take care of it.
Do you drink alcohol and get ‘buzzed’, or worse?  Probably not a good idea.  Do you feel like taking revenge on someone?  Let God take care of it.  Would God consider you blameless in His eyes?  You can be.  Repent for your sin and turn to Jesus for salvation.  Jesus humbled himself and died on a cross to pay for your sin, and he Father raised Jesus from the dead.  God said if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and if you believe in your heart that the Father raised Jesus from the dead, you would be saved.  Why don’t you do that right now?
