Ep. 93 MAKING A VELVET
Ep. 93 MAKING A VELVET QUEEN SUNFLOWER and Progress on the Big Sunflowers Mosaic.
In Episode 93 from my mosaic studio, I pick up on the second big yellow sunflower on my 30"x30" GoBoard substrate.

Then I work on the center of the Velvet Queen Sunflower (accidentally labeled incorrectly in the video as Royal Velvet Sunflower) mosaic using cut-out ring of Go-Board and crumpled up aluminum foil to build up the center. Using black Apoxie Sculpt, I add the sun cabochon from Hobby Lobby and multi-colored beads in the center, pulling the string once they are embedded in the adhesive and making a bead mess! Next, I add Apoxie Sculpt and black glass pebbles to the outer ring. And finally, I add a layer of Apoxie Sculpt to the raised portion and push in yellow quartered glass rods.
Then I go back to work on the yellow sunflowers using a feather cuts to bring the petals to life. I finish the second flower and begin on the third after looking at my reference photo and deciding where I will lay in the dark, medium and light colored glass. More yellow glass is cut into feather cuts so I can work relatively quickly.
I finish the six main red petals while teaching class and pick up at home to work on the six background petals, using 6-7 different colors and textured glass. Once I finish adhering the last piece to my mosaic I wait 24 hours before I begin grouting.
Using black sanded grout, and without taping the center off, I carefully spread the grout by hand and using a blue ceramic finishing tool. The edges are also tackled by hand grouting each petal to make sure they are covered. Then the process of cleaning off the glass to reveal the bright colors begins, with plenty of waiting for the grout to set up and haze over. Finally it's done and WOW! This mosaic is a super sparkler! It really catches the light and looks AMAZING!!!
