In this video we'll write the correct formula for Nitrous acid.

To write the formula for Nitrous acid we’ll use the Periodic Table, a Common Ion Table, and follow some simple rules.

Because Nitrous acid has a polyatomic ion (the group of non-metals after the metal) we’ll need to use a table of names for common polyatomic ions, in addition to the Periodic Table.

-- General Rules ---

If the name for the acid is:

Hydro + stem + ic
1.  Write H.
2.  Use the stem to find element name on the
               periodic table.
3. Balance the charges.

Stem + ic
1.  Write the ion: stem + ate
2.  Look up ion on Common Ion Table.
3.  Write H and then the ion formula.
4.  Balance the charges.

Stem + ous
1.  Write the ion: stem + ite
2.  Look up ion on Common Ion Table.
3.  Write H and then the ion formula.
4.  Balance the charges.
