In this video we’ll cover how to memorize the common polyatomic ions and how to use the polyatomic ion table. We’ll also cover several important ions of transition metals you should know.
The common polyatomic ion list is used frequently in chemistry when naming and writing formulas of chemical compounds. Some instructors allow us to have the polyatomic ion table on tests, others do not. Check to be sure and if you aren’t allowed to have one make sure you know the ions you are responsible for memorizing.
A key rule to remember is that polyatomic ions ending in -ite have one less Oxygen atom than the corresponding ion ending in -ate. So NO2 - is the nitrite ion. NO3 - is called nitrate.
