After its involvement in World War II, Japan was destroyed. But only a decade after the end of the war, Japan began to grow economically at a very high rate. So high that by 1989 it had become an economic and industrial power. Japan was the world's factory, along with the United States, the same role that China plays today. In fact, most economists expected Japan to overtake the United States as the world's largest economy. It had world-renowned companies such as Toyota, Sony, Toshiba and Mitsubishi. Even in 1989, 32 of the world's 50 largest companies were Japanese. Today, however, everything is very different. First, in 2022, there is only one Japanese company among the world's 50 largest, which is Toyota. And second, Japan could never be the world's largest economy. So the questions are: Why couldn't Japan replace the United States as the first economic superpower? What cultural factor explains Japan's stagnation? And why can its economy be expected to continue to worsen?
