Watch the importance of magnetic damping of a quadruple beam balance.
Two weighings are performed: one with magnetic damping, and one with the magnetic damper plate removed. It is obvious that magnetic damping is important for damping oscillations on a very sensitive scale.
The magnetic damping mechanism works by letting permanent magnets induce electrical currents, so-called eddy currents into an aluminum plate which is suspended between the magnets, essentially spending the kinetic energy by converting it into electric currents, and, ultimately, into heat.
