MORE Korean Temples Motifs and Symbols [History of Korea]

#korea #buddhism #koreanhistory #koreanculture #historyofkorea (episode 53) In this second video I make on the subject of Korean temples, I’ll take a look at 13 more motifs, symbols, decorations and narrative paintings found in temples on the Korean peninsula. This time I will take a look at the four musical instruments (called samul 사물) found in Korean temples. I will then look at two sets of narrative paintings we often find in temples: the eight great events in Buddha’s life - Palsangdo 팔상도 and the Simudo 심우도, ox-herding murals. Next, I will talk about many different motifs like the apsaras 천녀: beautiful maidens that fly around in the heavens, the 12 spirit generals 십이신장, animals found in the Chinese zodiac, the circle 원상, the fish and the supreme ultimate (yin and yang). Then, I’ll take a look at the altars 불단 and canopies 천개 found inside temples, as well as paintings of flowers on the ceilings 천장의 꽃 and intricate latticework 문살 found on temple doors. Finally we’ll take a brief look at the vajra 바즈라, a ritual instrument.
