Korean Folk Painting, An Overview - Minhwa 민화 [History of Korea]

Unlike formal paintings that were made for the court, by court painters and following many rules, minhwa was produced for the ordinary citizens and often made by anonymous painters. Folk paintings were created to represent the common people’s thoughts and emotions, wishes and hopes. I will take a broad look at some characteristics of minhwa. Where was minhwa found, what it usually depicted, why it was made and which myths it depicted. Then, I will explore the different categories of minhwa, what they depict and what they symbolize. There are sixteen types but some of them can overlap. Some types I will explore are: Jakhodo 작호도, paintings of tigers, Yonhwado 연화도, paintings of lotus and Munjado 문자도, paintings of Hanja (Chinese characters). Minhwa can give the viewer a brief, yet interesting glance at Korean culture as well as its history and myths. It is still very popular nowadays and inspires future generations of artists.
