Local time is calculated based
Local time is calculated based on the movement of the sun, whereas standard time is the time set by a country for certain locations based on a standard meridian or central meridian. While the local time is reckoned by the shadow cast by the Sun, standard time is reckoned by the time zones.
When one crosses the IDL, one either gains or loses a day depending on which way they are traveling. When one moves from the East of the IDL to the West of the IDL, a day is lost and vice-versa.
Local time varies with longitude, but standard time remains constant for a given location. Standard time refers to the fixed time for places falling in the same meridian, set in a country by law. Places on the same longitude have same local times but different standard times.
Geography is a very important subject in the UPSC exam for both IAS Prelims and Mains papers. Geography for UPSC covers Indian Geography as well as World geography. Physical Geography, Human Geography, Environmental Geography are broadly covered under by the UPSC Syllabus.
