Latitudes and Longitudes are imaginary
Latitudes and Longitudes are imaginary lines used to determine the location of a place on the Earth. Latitudes are parallel circles from the equator up to the poles. Lines of longitude are imaginary lines that run north to south from pole to pole. Longitude is measured in degrees, minutes, and seconds. While the latitude lines are always equally spaced, longitude lines are furthest from each other at the equator and meet at the poles.
Important parallels of latitudes are: Tropic of Cancer (23½° N), Tropic of Capricorn (23½° S), Arctic circle at 66½° north of the equator and
Antarctic circle at 66½° south of the equator.
Zero meridian, the one which passes through the Royal Astronomical Observatory at Greenwich, near London is the Prime Meridian (0°) from which all other meridians radiate eastwards and westwards up to 180°.
