STORYLINE:

Northern Alliance forces made a show of strength for the media on Thursday as they assembled tanks and armaments near the frontline in northern Afghanistan.

Russian-built T-55 tanks were paraded for the international cameras, along with a host of smaller tanks and armoured personnel carriers.

The opposition alliance in northern Afghanistan is believed to be coordinating its offensive with the United States.

It's also expecting fresh arms deliveries from two of its strongest allies in the fight against the Taliban - Iran and Russia.

The United States has warned the Taliban to hand over Osama bin Laden or face the consequences.

The Northern Alliance, as the anti-Taliban opposition is known, is hoping for US strikes that would help in its struggle against the Taliban.

Conditions for the troops are set to become worse over the coming weeks, with the onset of cold weather, rain and snow.

Meanwhile, a shipment of sugar and oil from the aid agency ACTED arrived on Thursday for thousands of refugees in the Northern Alliance stronghold of Hozda Vahaudin.

They've fled the Taliban regime and the ongoing drought.

Only a handful of supplies had arrived in the last three weeks as a result of escalating tension following the attacks on the US.
