In Part II of our Taupo Series, we discuss the supervolcanic eruption that formed Lake Taupo. The Oruanui Eruption. This supervolcanic eruption was the most recent magnitude VEI8 volcanic eruption that our Earth has experienced in the past 70,000 years, since Lake Toba's supervolcanic eruption. It is one of New Zealand's largest eruptions ever, and in this video you'll learn how it transpired.
Lake Taupo is the largest freshwater lake in New Zealand and is a truly beautiful body of water surrounded by an equally picturesque landscape. However, it has a more destructive past and is the site of two massive eruptions that more or less made New Zealand's North Island uninhabitable after they occurred. The lake itself was formed during a supervolcanic eruption that is the most recent supervolcanic eruption to have occurred on our planet roughly 26,500 years ago. But the most eruption occurred a little under 2000 years ago and is what we covered in part 1 of this video. I am thinking about diving into the older super volcanic eruptions that occurred and the actual Taupo Volcanic Complex in general with other parts that follow.
