Do you want to order prescription eyeglasses online but your optometrist didn't include your pupillary distance (PD) on your prescription? Don't worry, our video tutorial has you covered. https://payneglasses.com

▷ Why Is Pupillary Distance (PD) Important?
For us to accurately craft your lenses for your eyes, we need to know the distance between the center each pupil to the bridge of your your nose, also known as your pupillary distance (PD). Much like shoe size, your PD is not something you can guess—it must be an accurate measurement. Without it, you may not be able to properly see out of your glasses. Unfortunately, not all print-out prescriptions you take home from the optometrist include your PD. Fortunately, you can measure your PD yourself right at home!

To measure your PD by yourself, you will need 1) yourself and 2) a mirror. Measuring with a friend is preferred and if you have one available, definitely watch our tutorial on how to measure your pupillary distance with a friend in the related videos listed below.

▷ What Measurements Should I Expect For My PD?
We usually don't give an average pupillary distance because this sometimes results in customers attempting to guess instead of measure their PD. (Yes, this has happened!) But for a starting baseline, a 50mm or smaller binocular PD (the measurement between both pupils, or combined monocular measurements) is average for a child. If you are an adult and measure 50mm or lower when measuring on your own PD, we recommend you check your ruler and measuring technique and try again!

▷ Can I Just Guess My PD Or Base It On The Width Of My Face?
Excellent question! No, you should not guess your PD and your PD measurement is also separate from face width. PD measures your pupil distance, or the distance between the center of each pupil to the bridge of your nose, whereas the width of your face is the width of your face cheekbone to cheekbone. This means someone with a wider face can have a small or average PD because their eyes—AKA their pupil distance—are closer together.

Finally, guessing your PD is very similar to trying to guess your shoe size—an incorrect shoe size will result in it fitting too wide or narrow for comfort. Similarly, an inaccurate PD may result in your prescription glasses not feeling right for you, or you're unable to see out of them altogether, and you'll have to order another pair.
