Welcome back to ‘the bible says what’.  Today I will summarize Proverbs chapter 29, which contains 27 of Solomon’s proverbs about kings, the righteous, and discipline.  Solomon began: the fool hardens his neck when he is scolded.  He either laughs or gets angry when someone points out his sin. When the wicked come to power, the people groan. They take bribes and ruin their own land.  The wicked man will get trapped by his own sin.  The wicked are not concerned about providing justice for the poor.  THey only care about themselves.  These kinds of people hate the righteous.  A hot tempered man with a quick fuse abounds in sin.
Solomon discussed wise men and wise kings.  When the wise man comes to power the people rejoice.  He makes his parents glad.  Wise kings bring stability to the land with justice.  They arrest and convict the law breakers.  The wise and righteous person is concerned for the rights of the poor.  If a ruler begins to listen to lies, his ministers will become wicked.  The righteous ones will quit.  But if a king judges the poor with truth, his throne will be established forever.  Where there is no vision, the people perish.  A wise king will give his people a clear vision.
Solomon continued.  He said ‘correct your son and he will bring you delight and give you comfort.  If you withhold spankings and if you let your child get his own way all the time, you will regret it.  You will be ashamed of your children.  The proud man will be brought down.  God will make sure of it.  But a humble spirit will obtain honor from the Lord.  Whoever trusts in the Lord will be exalted in the end.
The most important verse in this chapter is Proverbs 29:2 which states, ‘When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn..’
The thing I think the Lord wants us to understand after reading this chapter is that he wants everyone everywhere to heed his warnings and to be wise.  The king of the land needs to be wise, and the smallest child needs to be wise.  God wants people to be concerned about providing justice to the poor.  He does not want people to have a quick temper.  God wants people to have a vision and a dream for their lives.  And God wants people to discipline their children the proper way so their children will grow up honorably.
Are you wise enough to discipline your children correctly?  Do you give justice to the poor in your sphere of influence?  Do you have a short fuse?  Why don’t you surrender and give yourself fully to God? Die to your old wicked self and be born again.  Repent for your sin and turn to Jesus for salvation.  Jesus humbled himself and died on a cross to pay for your sin, and the Father raised Jesus from the dead.  God said if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and if you believe in your heart that the Father raised Jesus from the dead, you would be saved.  Why don’t you do that right now?
