The Siemens Charger series of locomotives has become the primary source of motive power for commuter and intercity Amtrak trains all over the US. Soon, the locomotives will also become the main units used in long distance service. Over the last several years, I have captured a number of the Charger locomotives running on various test trains. I have compiled a number of these clips into one video showing several different testing operations. Here is what you will see in this video, broken down by service:

Pacific Surfliner:
During the second half of 2018, the Pacific Surfliner, operated by Amtrak and funded/organized by the State of California, received 14 new SC-44 locomotives and began pressing them into service. Included in this video are several scenes of revenue trains (usually 564 and 573) running with multiple SC-44 locomotives at the beginning of operations. The locomotives were required to go through a 500 mile "burn in" phase before formal acceptance by the State of California, which is why they are seen running two or even three on one train.

Amtrak Cascades:
SC-44 1408 was delivered to the State of Washington in 2020 for Amtrak Cascades service. It operated several trips in the fall of 2020 on trains 500 and 505 paired with a second Charger locomotive, prior to being approved for solo running. This was not the 500 mile "burn in" runs. Those were conducted at the Federal Railroad Administration test track in Pueblo, Colorado on behalf of Washington State.

Coaster:
San Diego's North County Transit District (NCTD), received 5 SC-44 locomotives in the fall of 2020 to replace F40PHM-2C types that were built in 1994. In October of 2020, NCTD began testing locomotives 5001 and 5002 on a stretch of track between Oceanside and the San Diego/Orange County boundary. This was part of the 500 mile "burn in" testing. Then in early 2021, Coaster ran several simulated service test trains with two Chargers pulling full train sets, running in the middle of the day during a break in normal Coaster operations.

Amtrak:
Amtrak borrowed two SC-44s from Illinois to test on long distance trains in 2020. The test results were to aid in the development of the long distance variant - ALC-42. Locomotives 4628 and 4627 are seen on a preliminary test train along the route of the Empire Builder in January of 2020 and then 4627 is seen in revenue service testing on the Empire Builder in the summer of 2020.

To finish off, we will see some of the first runs of the ALC-42s when entering service in 2022.
