In 1925, the Scopes Monkey Trial pitted science against religion in a small town high school teacher, defying a new law banning the teaching of evolution. The "Monkey Trial," as it was dubbed by the press, became a national spectacle. William Jennings Bryan, a famous politician, argued for creationism, while Clarence Darrow, a renowned lawyer, defended evolution. Though Scopes was found guilty, the trial exposed the growing clash between modern science and traditional beliefs. The national attention and mockery of Bryan's views ultimately weakened anti-evolution laws. The trial remains a landmark moment in the history of science education in the United States.
