Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons of Indian History in Hindi. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Benkei, a legendary figure in Japanese history, who lived a life that blurred the lines between warrior, monk, and rogue. Born in the 12th century, he started as a monk, then became a mountain ascetic known for his immense strength.
Legend tells of him seeking 1,000 swords by challenging samurai in duels. His quest ended when a young man, who turned out to be the future warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune, easily defeated him on Gojo Bridge. Impressed by Benkei's loyalty and prowess, Yoshitsune recruited him as his retainer.
Together, they formed a legendary partnership, facing numerous battles against their rivals, the Taira clan. Benkei's strength and unwavering loyalty made him a formidable ally for Yoshitsune's strategic brilliance.
Despite their victories, their downfall came due to political intrigue. Forced to flee, their story ends tragically at Koromogawa no Tatakai (Battle of Koromo River), where Benkei is said to have stood his ground alone, holding back the enemy even after his death.
Benkei remains a popular figure in Japanese folklore, celebrated for his strength, loyalty, and spirit.
