Here are pieces of lost media from Disney’s Alice in Wonderland that is so obscure that is barely talked about online, probably one of the most obscure pieces of Disney Lost Media of all time.

Despite this film is one of Disney’s most iconic films in their library there does seem to be missing pieces of media from not just the film itself but other things like commercials and educational films that have been lost to time due to their obscurity. Even though the film didn’t do well in it’s theatrical release it didn’t stop Disney to use the characters such as Alice, the Cheshire CatMad Hatter, Thackeray, Dormouse, and even unused characters that didn’t appear in the film like the Gryphon and the Mock Turtle in Jell-O commercials from the mid 1950s. While a few have been archived online there was one that was lost for over seven decades that features the Mad Hatter, Thackery, and Dormouse which I discovered on the historic films website and now it’s easily available online. However animation cels of these commercials have surfaced over the years which unlike the uploads of the commercials online they are in color instead of black and white which means there are lost colorized versions of these commercials that seems to be nowhere available online. There’s even animation cels of commercials that also haven’t been available online either, which they are the only evidence of their existence.

And while storyboards of deleted scenes of the film have been officially released on the 1995 Laserdisc release, the 2004-2010 DVD Release, and the 2011 Blu-Ray release, there does seem to be a scene that did got fully animated but has never been released to the public. On May 11, 2012, an animation cel was posted on collectorsweekly.com of Alice trying to sneak away from the Jabberwocky dragon. And while storyboards of the scene have been officially released as well as the song that was recorded by Stan Freberg the scene being fully animated has never surfaced online and has never been included on any home video release of the film which the fully animated scene is either deep in Disney’s archives or it possibly doesn’t exist anymore and it’s possible it was filmed in live action as well since the whole movie was filmed in live action in order for the animators to reference the movements by the actors which a full cut of it does seem to exist and some footage has been released on home video but the full live action footage has yet to be released to the public. There’s also an eBay listing of a cel of Alice in a red dress instead of her usual blue one which either she was originally going to be red, test footage of Alice was made, it was used for a commercial, or maybe it’s just a reproduction cel. Interestingly Alice is shown in a red dress in early promotional material of the film so maybe that could explain it but that’s just speculation.

In the 1970s and 80s, Disney made educational films based on the 1951 film that was only given out to schools, charities, and civic groups. The first film Mr. Dermis’s Holliday featuring the White Rabbit, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and the Mad Hatter was to teach people about skin care. Not much information on it can be found besides listings on wordpoint.com which they claim the film was unfinished so it’s unknown how much far into production the film got. Another Educational film called Alice in Communication Land was made in 1976 and given out to schools to teach students on honing their communication skills. From the looks of the cels the animation seems on par to the original film, in fact most listings claim that Ken O'Connor who worked on several Disney films such as Pinocchio, Dumbo, and Lady and the Tramp who also worked as a layout artist on Alice returned to work for this film as well as other educational films. It seems like the film did got fully completed but since it was shown only to schools, the film itself has never surfaced online which is completely lost as only animation cels are the only material from the film that has surfaced online. Another film from 1980 according to some listings called Alice in Wonderland For Dinner Or For Dinner is even more scarce and little information than the previous films, as only four animation cels from it has surfaced online.

The last piece of media is a commercial from the 1990s, according to archived eBay listings of animation cels on worthpoint.com the look of the cels suggests that the scene that was reanimated from the original film with some differences is the one of The Queen of Hearts and Alice playing a game of Croquet Match. It’s unknown what the commercial was advertising for, maybe Golf Clubs, some kind of product or DisneyLand or Disney World? Until we get an answer I guess we’ll never know. It’s unknown if the commercial even aired or got far into production.
