Abbeyleix Bog has been rescued
Abbeyleix Bog has been rescued the Abbeyleix community which a wonderful reflection on the people involved. A high proportion of Irish bogs are damaged unfortunately and Abbeyleix is an example of this.
The drainage trenches that were but into this bog several years ago are slowly filling in but it will take many years for this process to be finished. It will only be at this point that the bog will be truly regenerating.
Bog-land needs to be fully saturated to be functioning properly. A dried out bog is not a benign landscape as it releases large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere just sitting their.
